Day 3 2024 Kennewick Team

February 11, 2024

On Monday, Pastor Scott Paulson and I went into town with Baba Jeff to run some errands. It was so lively and heartbreaking! In the US, many families live paycheck to paycheck. In Kenya, many families make their living by selling goods on the street and living day-to-day to feed their families. For years, I’ve heard about the street boys who sniff glue. We encountered one about halfway through the day. The boy couldn’t have been older than 11 and I don’t think I’ll ever erase his face from my memory. His eyes were as big as saucers. Jeff pointed…

Day 2 2024 Kennewick Team

February 6, 2024

Sunday was a very special day as we were able to join the children for church. Church services are held in the “baby house” for the toddlers and babies and in the dining pavilion for the other children. The church service was so beautiful! The kids recite memory verses and sing worship songs. Their voices are so smooth and beautifully blended. I will share a video later as the wifi is very finicky. Trust me though, you won’t want to miss it. My new goal is to memorize each of the memory verses our children know! What a gift that…

Day 1 2024 Kennewick Team

February 4, 2024

Greetings from Kenya! Though our initial flight from Pasco to Seattle was canceled, we made it to Kenya without any major hiccups. We arrived at In Step Children’s Home on Friday evening. The children greeted us with hugs and excitement. They were thrilled to see many members from South Hills Church returning. Our board treasurer, Valarie Yoder, is on the team and my heart melted when I heard a group of boys run up to her, shouting, “Auntie Val! Auntie Val!”On Saturdays, the school offers a study hall for students who need or want it. Meanwhile, I walked over to…

Day 5 2024 New York Team

January 27, 2024

Good morning, friends! We hope your weekend is off to a great start. Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy this quick post from our New York team’s last day on campus. We know how much you’ve enjoyed these so we’re thrilled to share we’ll soon be able to share more as we have a team from Washington state heading to Kenya this week. From Daniel Traina, board member’s blog recap: We will be leaving the children’s this morning with a 90-minute drive to Eldorat, A 60-minute flight to Nairobi, then Drs. Day 4 2024 New York Team

January 18, 2024

From Friday’s report: Our dental team treated 60 more children and only have 25 more to go on Monday and Tuesday. Hopefully, they will have time for staff cleanings. They also did fluoride treatments on the 14 Stepping Stones (our center for children with special needs) kids. Dr. Gary will do classes in prevention on Monday. He shows a short video on proper dental hygiene and discusses how to have healthy teeth. There are always jobs that pop up that we had no idea we were coming here to do. Flinn Hackett now has taken school portraits of all 200+…

Day 3 New York 2024 Team

January 16, 2024

I sent out yesterday’s post before dinner, figuring the evenings had settled into a nice routine of dinner at our sleeping quarters, devotions with children at 7 PM, lastly return to our sleeping quarters for our 8 PM reflections. Nothing too exciting to report since we all are tired and asleep by 9:30 pm. I was wrong about nothing too exciting… The children’s devotion is split into 4 groups. Older boys, younger boys, older girls and younger girls. It’s held inside the dormitory rooms so I can only attend the boys, etc. We have been going exclusively to the older…

January 2024

January 13, 2024

Jambo everyone! Wow! Can you believe how fast 2023 flew by? It seems like each year passes more quickly than the year before! When I stop and realize that we have been in Kenya for more than twenty years, I can hardly believe it! And when it occurred to me that we came to Kenya when I was a bit younger than my daughter is now… where has time gone? I hope your holiday season was as wonderful as ours was! Christmas Day included all the normal In Step Children’s Home Christmas festivities: worship, feast, drama presentation, dance party, etc. The weather was perfect for grilling the chicken…

Day 2 New York 2024 Team

January 11, 2024

Good morning, all! We saw how much you enjoyed the New York team’s update from our children’s home. Here is another update from board member, Daniel Traina, who is visiting our campus with a team from the Pittsford, New York area. WOW. Another amazing day. The dental team has now completed 90 full cleanings, 20 procedures and 180 initial exams. We hope to do 90 more cleanings and all of the needed procedures of children and then see some of the staff. They will be going over to Stepping Stones (our center for special needs children) for a teeth cleaning…
